报告摘要:Onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, is caused by a nematode worm and is transmitted by blackflies in the genus Simulium. These insects can migrate more than 500km, but the epidemiological importance of their movements is not fully understood. Field experiments carried out in West Africa designed to understand this phenomenon on a less extensive scale will be described, after a description of details of how the disease is transmitted. The results of the experiments and serological surveys of affected populations will be described and two simple models to assist analyses will be described. It is hoped that more appropriate models, perhaps involving diffusion equations could be proposed.
